EEG Experiment on English visual word processing 

The Brain and Second Language Lab in the Department of Linguistics at HKU is running an EEG experiment on English visual word processing. In this study, you must make decisions on whether words presented to you on a screen are real words in English. The experiment will take approximately 2 hours, including the time necessary to wash your hair after the experiment. You will be compensated 250 HKD at the end of the experiment.  

Eligibility Criteria: 

  1. Student at HKU 
  2. Age 18-25 
  3. Native speaker of American, Australian, British, Canadian or New Zealand English
  4. Monolingual or dominantly English-speaking bilinguals
  5. Have normal or corrected to normal vision 
  6. Have no history of neurological disorders (epilepsy, etc.) 
  7. Right-handed

Duration: 2 Hours  

Location: Room 9.27, 9/F, Run Run Shaw Tower, HKU Centennial Campus 

Participants will need to wash their hair with shampoo only the morning of the experiment, otherwise they will be turned away without compensation and may not participate. Makeup/sunscreen must not be worn, otherwise participants will be asked to partially remove it from their cheeks.

EEG Experiment on English Processing

The Brain and Second Language Lab is recruiting students who scored a Level 5, 5* or 5** in the English Language from HKDSE to join an EEG experiment on English processing.

The experiment procedure included deciding if words presented on a screen exist in English. 

The experiment takes around two hours, including the time to wash your hair after the experiment. You will be compensated 200 HKD at the end of the experiment. 

Eligibility Criteria: 

  1. Student at HKU
  2. Age 18-25
  3. Native speaker of Cantonese and speaker of English as a second language
  4. 5, 5* or 5** English HKDSE Score or equivalent
    1. an 8 or above in IELTS is considered as a 5** 
  5. Have normal or corrected to normal vision
  6. Have no history of neurological disorders (epilepsy, etc.)
  7. Right-handed

Duration: 2 Hours
